Pre-Launch Jitters, But it All Worked Out

Reading from my book

my launch flyer created by one of the Tavistock Library staff

The night before my book launch, I had everything ready to load in the car—boxes of books, my notebook to record sales, reading copy with pages marked, several pens for signing (in case one quit), a tablecloth for my book table, and my book rack. I fell asleep easily, knowing those things were ready to go.
I woke close to two a.m. with some sore muscles and my mind whirling. What if people don’t show up who said they were coming? This was our home town audience with friends from the city coming too. The editor of the weekly newspaper had indicated his willingness to come too.
Eventually I went back to sleep. The morning of the event, I signed the whole lot of books that I was taking along; I could personalize any as requested. We were ready with time to spare. My husband had his favourite little camera ready, and the tripod. We set out for Tavistock.

From Oxford County Library

We arrived early. The library was fairly quiet as I set up my rack and books. I waited near the door so I could greet my guests as they arrived. It was getting close to 11, and no one was there yet except the library staff and a few other patrons. I felt like a kid at a birthday party, waiting for her friends to arrive. But this was after all a Saturday morning, a day when people want to go a little slower.
Where are they? I wondered. Close to 11, people started to arrive, in singles, in twos and small groups. Our eldest daughter, son-in-law, and two happy little children arrived, the small ones showing me a truck and a doll they’d brought along. Their smiles told me they were pleased to be in this interesting place.

We started a little late and more people trickled in. One guest had to leave at the end of my first reading. More came and the chairs filled. The children played in the house centre during the readings. I needn’t have worried for those who planned to be there had come.

A pleasing place for a book launch

The reading went well, allowing for people to reflect on what I’d read, or laugh when there was a place of humour. My husband took a video and my publisher, Glynis Belec, of Angel Hope Publishing, had her cell phone poised. Then the editor of the weekly paper, Tavistock Gazette, arrived about the end of my question and answer time. I hoped I had answered people’s questions to their satisfaction when I was called away for a special photo with the librarian.
During the social time, we had more conversations. Deb Schurink, Chief Librarian, and her staff  had set out an attractive table of refreshments for guests to enjoy. I signed and sold books and enjoyed the company of those who had come. Our family was waiting for us over at Quehl’s. We’d have lunch together before heading home.

shelves behind me had interesting items on them too

I was pleased with the way the event had gone and that my guests seemed to enjoy themselves, pleased too with the varied supporters and the library staff who prepared for the launch. Thank you to all who came to make it such an enjoyable launch.

Fan of Facebook - Meyer

Social media is here to stay – whether we like it or not. So I figure, I might as well like it!

I was going to entitle this blog post “I love Facebook!” but thought that might be taking things a bit too far.

Maybe it would be more accurate to say that I don’t dislike Facebook as much as I used to (lol). Acquiring a high-speed Internet connection has helped a lot with my acceptance of this form of social media.

Reading this poem by Stephanie Nickel also really helped me to “see the light.”

E-Living

While admitting
I have wasted
Far too much time
On a certain social network,
I also proclaimed
My excitement
That I’d made friends
All around the world.
To that statement,
One lady responded,
“Who needs them?”
Or something to that effect.
Time for a big breath.
E-living
Is definitely not a substitute
For face-to-face,
Heart-to-heart,
Day-to-day
Life.
However,
In my case,
And for many others,
It is a wonderful way
To connect,
To support,
To stay in touch.
As I’ve mentioned,
I’ve made
Some great friends
Online.
I’ve kept in touch
With friends
I rarely get to see.
When I’m too far away
To hug a hurting friend,
A (((hug)))
At least let’s her know
I’m thinking of her.
When another friend
Shares exciting news,
I can
(jump up and down)
And rejoice.
When the miles separate,
My friends are as close
As the computer screen.
My heart soars
At the thought
That I can brighten someone’s day.
So…
Who needs them?
That’d be me!
As long as I’m able,
I’ll continue to soar
In cyberspace.

Personally, I still find Facebook more of a worry than a joy. I worry that I’m not sending a flower in return for the flower that I received or participating in the newest poll or building a farm or a city or even chatting! I don’t know where to stop or start on such things so I usually just dip in for a quick visit every once in a while but don’t spend a lot of time there.

Having said all that, I would love to be your friend. I just need to get a "roundtuit" and accept some of those friend requests.

Facebook can keep you busy for hours! And there is a ton of good stuff out there. One Facebook page that I would like to recommend to you is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hot-Apple-Cider-Anthologies
On this page, you’ll find out about a wonderful new anthology, A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider, edited by N. J. Lindquist and Wendy Elaine Nelles.

See you around cyberspace - maybe even on Facebook!

The Book Launch Blues - Wright

As a Canadian Christian writer I feel like a flea on an elephant. My first novel, The Lightning File, has arrived and I’m faced with the daunting task of making that elephant notice my existence.

How? With limited financial resources, finite energy, limited time and a personality that seeks the background this is extremely daunting. I’m tempted to give up before I get started. But I believe in the book and others have been very encouraging. Most important, without claiming that the book was commissioned by God, I can say that He has given quiet assurance all along the way.

So, first I sent letters and emails to those who had bought my earlier books. Orders began to trickle in. Next I got permission from my home church to put a descriptive leaflet in members’ mail slots. Response has been quite wonderful. I’ve sold 35 books to church members already! And they are buzzing about the book’s suspense.

I’ve sent out a few review copies and news releases to local media. So far I’ve had two articles in area newspapers and another reporter is coming this morning. I’ll continue to pursue these avenues as time permits. Local libraries have been encouraging.

Visits to fifteen or so bookstores have yielded contracts to supply small consignments in most of them. I’ve had a book table at an arts festival and also at a fall fair with slim results. In the weeks ahead I have book launches scheduled in Cobourg, Brighton and Mississauga. (If you’re in the Mississauga area this coming Saturday, Sept. 15th, I’d love to see you at 2397 Huron Park Place: west of Mavis and south of Dundas—follow the balloons.)

The more I think about my limitations, the greater peace I have. God seems to whisper; Just do what you can and leave the rest to me. Besides isn’t it more important to please me than be a ‘success’? So I cast my bread upon the waters, rein in my impatient personality and remind myself not to despise the day of small things.
